2026 Cost Guide

How Much Does a Custom Driveway Gate Cost in Michigan?

Straight numbers from a Kalamazoo gate builder: what gates cost, what drives the price, and how to get the most gate for your budget.

The short answer

Most custom driveway gates we build run between $5,000 and $20,000, installed. A simple single-swing steel gate sits at the lower end. A wide, double, monogrammed estate gate with an automatic opener, keypad, and intercom sits at the upper end.

Gate repairs are a different story. Most local repair visits are billed at $100/hour with a 2-hour minimum, so a typical fix costs a small fraction of a new gate.

What drives the price

Wider and taller gates take more material, heavier hinges or rollers, bigger posts, and a stronger opener.
Steel offers the most strength and customization for the money. Aluminum costs more per foot but never rusts and is easy on openers. Wrought iron detail and wood infill each add labor.
Arches, monograms, address numbers, logos, and scrollwork are where a gate becomes yours. They add cutting and welding time, but they’re also what make people stop and look.
Swing gates are often the most affordable. Slide and cantilever gates need more steel and hardware but solve tight, sloped, or snowy driveways.
An automatic opener, solar kit, keypad, intercom, cameras, and exit sensors each add to the price. You can also install the gate now and automate it later.
Post size, concrete, slope, soil, distance to power, and travel distance all play a part.

How to get more gate for your budget

  • Buy direct from the builder. You skip the dealer markup.
  • Choose steel with a quality finish over specialty materials.
  • Put your design budget where it shows, like the top arch or a monogram.
  • Plan wiring for an opener now, even if you automate later.
  • Bundle the gate and matching fence in one project.

Why our prices are lower

Customers regularly tell us our quotes come in well below the big fence companies. The reason is simple: we design and fabricate every gate in our own Kalamazoo shop and install it with our own crew. There’s no catalog markup and no subcontractor in the middle.
